UNIT CONTENT ▼
Defining 'healthy eating'
We start out looking at not only what the concept 'healthy eating' means in reality but also by looking at regions whose eating practices result in healthful longevity. We can take a great deal from the learnings from inquiries such as the Blue Zones to better understand what healthful eating is without reducing food and compounds to their smallest components and loosing sight of the big picture.

Theories of food choice and eating habits
In this module we dive into the internal and external factors and triggers that influence what we choose to eat and why we choose to eat them. We also gain an understanding into the role of food preferences, which is quite different from our food choices. You'll take a close look at the human physiological triggers of hunger and satiety including hormones, as well as foods and nutrients and how they influence our hunger and fullness.

Models in health and exploring health behaviour change and what works
We take a close look at the models that are commonly used in public health initiatives to alter our attitudes and eating behaviours in a positive manner. The models help us understand the factors in food choice that are able to be influenced and what strategies are most effective.

The psychology of learning and its influence over food choice and eating habits
In this topic we explore the psychology of learning, how learning occurs and how this influences habits such as eating habits. We explore techniques that we can share with clients to help them unlearn and create new positive habits that allow for a positive relationship to food.

Eating, personality, emotions and physiological motivational influences
A fascinating topic that looks at the relationship between our personalities, emotions and personal motivation and our eating habits. You'll explore the psychology of personality and common personality tests and how look at how emotional characteristics can play a role in when we eat, why we eat and for how long.

Supporting client behaviour change
Here we will explore eating behaviour questionnaires and scales, as well as techniques to share with clients that bring together what you've learned. You'll work through examples of tools that can support positive eating habits and support your clients connection to food in a positive way, one that views food as nourishment rather than a tool to alter their bodies.

The role of marketing and its effect on food choice, eating habits and health
Media and marketing have an enormous role in our health today, for good or for bad. One of the key strategies in promoting positive eating habits and body satisfaction is to increase media and marketing awareness by checking the messaging and imagery against reality. We look at some of the challenges consumers face in maintaining their body integrity and function in the face of often constant and persistent messaging that has little to do with health and a lot to do with profits.

The power of food labels and transparency
A wonderful strategy to share with clients is the ability to read food labels, and while many countries are being 'persuaded' by corporations or overseas governments to water down their labelling laws we can still use them to empower clients to make informed food and brand choices that support the wellness goals.

Bringing it all together in practice
You'll bring the concepts, models, tools, strategies and knowings together to formulate methodology to use with clients while remaining within scope and a client-led and client-empowering perspective.
