DNHC514: Sports Nutrition for Optimal Performance
Learning and teaching

We use modern blended learning approach. This course is designed for flexibility and ease, with downloadable topic-based textbooks in PDF format, guided instructions to keep you on track, and an interactive workbook packed with videos, tasks, and note-taking space. You'll also gain access to essential readings, templates, and tools for extended learning.

Assessment methods
At Well College we see assessments not as tests but as learning tools, they are not meant to trick you, rather they are designed to provide you with another learning opportunity.
The on-line assessment for this unit includes a set of 40 multiple choice questions. The assessment is open book and untimed and you can choose to take up to 3 attempts to complete.
Once you have completed and passed your quiz, you will be granted access to download your Certificate along with a Statement of Continuing Education Points. 

Learning at WCG
The classes you take will vary based on your course, offering different formats for meaningful interaction with staff, industry professionals, and peers. WCG courses focus on active learning rather than passive large-scale lectures, with content typically provided online through readings, videos, and other on-demand materials.

COURSE STRUCTURE >
There are six topics to complete the unit. Within each topic is a downloadable PDF Text Book.
There is an optional work book that follows each topic to help prepare for the final assessment.
There is a set of readings including tools and templates referred to in the text Book.
Estimate approximately 20 hours of study.

Continuing Education
Students enrolled in a WCG Diploma, Program or Certificate where this subject is a core elective, will have free ongoing access to the Coaching, Health and Business Live Classes.

UNIT content >
This unit is ideal for those wanting to work with the active or athletes, or that wish to have a better understanding of fuelling for performance and the unique requirements of athletes.

Topics covered include the elements of a healthy diet, an introduction to nutrients, and the relationship between food and energy. Students will explore Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs), hydration and fluid intake in sport, techniques for managing hydration during events, and how hydration affects performance and body temperature.
​The unit delves into energy production, systems, and expenditure, with a focus on macronutrients, fuel timing, and intake. It examines the roles of carbohydrates, fats, and protein in sports performance, along with concepts like body fat distribution, body mass measurements, and energy balance. Additional topics include nutritional supplements, the use of sporting agents, and their impact on performance.
​To put theory into practice, the course provides tools like meal planners, food suggestions, and guidance on the importance of timing in nutrition. It also addresses issues related to overweightness and body fat loss, and concludes with references and appendices for further study.

LEARNING OUTCOMES >
When awarded credit for this unit, a learner will:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the specific nutrition requirements of athletes
Students by the end of the course will be competent to:
  • Critically evaluate the principles of a healthy diet
  • Evaluate the current theories on sports nutrition
  • Review appropriate hydration fluid options and techniques for athletes
  • Describe the signs of dehydration
  • Explain the energy production systems in the body and reflect the association with fuelling
  • Summarise the classes of supplements
