UNIT CONTENT ▼
Mental Health & Awareness content
This course is designed to raise awareness, as such it is not intended to train participant’s to undertake treatment or care plans. The course is aimed at:
  1. Raising awareness around mental health.
  2. Raising awareness of mental health agencies.
  3. Highlighting the excellent mental health resources available to the community.
  4. Providing an evidence-based guide on how to initially respond and direct individuals in crises.
  5. Increasing the discussion and conversation at a community level around mental health.
You will look at factors, statistics, causes, signs and symptoms, who can assist, what works and the Mental Health Action Plan for each of the following:
  1. Depression
  2. Anxiety
  3. Eating disorders
  4. Gambling disorders
  5. Psychosis
Many courses are designed so learning tends to happen as a blend of passive learning (reading and practicing) and experience (tasks), in this course you’ll be an active participant in creating your knowledge. Mental Health Awareness involves just that… awareness, so to offer a completely passive course seems somewhat contradictory. You’ll be encouraged to go direct to reliable sources and fill in information, in doing so you’re building your knowledge, and your recall of where to go for information and resources and support will be firmly in your mind.

Trauma Awareness content
The second component of this short course is trauma awareness training. We are expecting to launch this before the end of July 2022. Participants will be required to review the film the Wisdom of Trauma (provided within the course) and provide their reflections on how they may view trauma and the importance of sensitivity to the expression of trauma by clients.

"Trauma is the invisible, but no less material, force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we form connections, and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-literate society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy makers, and legal personnel seek to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring, in order to better address the issues of the populations they serve. Through his insights a path materializes towards individual and collective healing, with practices that aim to create cures to address root causes before they manifest as physical symptoms."
Gabor Mate, The Wisdom of Trauma website

A growing tide of disconnection is all our concern

The prevalence of mental health issues across the globe continues to rise and alarm, as we become more disaffected, more dis-connected, more solitary we face challenges around anxiety, depression and other mental health problems. In Australia alone it is estimated that 14% of people suffer with anxiety, 6% from depression and the rates of suicide in certain groups continues to grow, year-on-year. Across the board some 20% of Australians experience some form of mental illness, and Australian statistics tend to mirror many Western countries. Australia's trends tend to mirror most western countries.

"The Wisdom of Trauma video deeply resonated with me on a personal level. It not only provided valuable insights into my past behaviours but also helped me understand the root causes of certain emotional reactions. "

"For me it’s clear that healing from trauma isn’t just an individual journey. It requires a village and a shift towards greater empathy and understanding in how we approach the challenges we face."
