The Gut & Microbiome

Health starts from the inside - it starts at the gut!
ENROL NOW
Gut health is key to overall well-being, affecting everything from digestion to disease. This in-depth course explores the microbiome’s role in health, backed by cutting-edge science. Perfect for holistic health enthusiasts!

Overview

So, what exactly is a ‘healthy’ gut microbiome? It’s a question more and more researchers around the world are investigating as they strive to understand how an unhealthy gut microbiome may cause – or be linked to – disease and poor health (physically, mentally and emotionally). Identifying the characteristics of a healthy microbiome is a challenging task, though – especially as each of us seems to have a unique microbiota that is constantly evolving.

You'll learn about this and more in this exciting course. Be clear there is a whole bunch of science in this subject, it's in-depth and explores physiology, disease and the life of bacteria. To keep things fresh the content is interspersed with videos, readings, and some activities, culminating with the option to create your own Gut Health Planner.

UNIT content >
Being familiar with the digestive canal and digestion
A quick foray down the digestive system and the physiology of the organs and glands to create a solid framework. You'll layer this on an understanding of how food is moved, the importance of how it comes into contact with cells along the way, and how it's broken down by the digestive canal and organs in order to feed and interact with the gut. We'll cover terminology such as microbiome, microbiota and microflora and the genomic role of the gut in health, as well as a review of the gut innate immunity.

The gut microbiome explored in detail

n this section you'll deep dive into the microbiome itself and better understand bacteria taxonomy as well as some of the essential roles of the gut in human health including vitamin synthesis and immunity which is topped off with a look at the relationship between the gut and disease. We look closely at the role of short-chain fatty acids and in particular butyrate in gut health, as well as factors in microbiome proliferation, the establishment of the microbiome in early life, the bacterium in the GIT, microbe location and function, and factors that influence the microbiome status.

The body, the mind and the gut

No journey into the microbiome is complete without a deep exploration of the gut-brain axis. We start out looking at the effect of stress on the gut in relation to GERD, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, diverticulitis, coeliac disease, IBS, SIBO, dysbiosis, leaky gut and intestinal permeability, lactose intolerance, and inflammatory bowel disease processes. It's in the section we pay particular attention to inflammatory processes and how they work for and at some stages against the body. Which brings us to a platform where we can fully explore the gut-brain axis, looking the role of the nervous system, vagus nerve, immune system, bacterial metabolites and neurotransmitters in mood and mental health challenges such as ASD, mood disorders and some psychiatric conditions. While we are here we delve into the gut-hormone axis looking at the influences of the gut and hormones on each other and how oestrogen's and various medications, such as antibiotics, might upset the two-way communicating channel. We round this large topic off with a look at gastric surgery and its impact on gut health.

Nurturing a healthy gut
We bring the knowledge around the gut together with knowledge about foods, nutrients and compounds to create a vision for how we can look after our gut, exploring rebiosis, dietary supports, and dietary patterns that tend to support a healthy gut as well as FODMAPS. In this section we place a spot light on functional foods, what are they, what is the criteria and what do they do and how. We then move onto probiotics and prebiotics and their role in maintaining health and look at a case study around yoghurts versus milk products masquerading as yoghurt). Lastly, we explore resistant starch and gut health and other nutrients that may effect the gut biome and the GAPS diet.
