Gut and health; the link

Leaky gut, the descriptively-named and little-known syndrome also referred to as intestinal permeability, may hold the key to unlocking various health issues including autoimmune disorders, digestive issues, nutrient malabsorption, and mood disorders. Despite the syndrome being linked to such an array of health issues, it is still relatively unknown amongst the general public, and rarely discussed in a standard GP’s office. I, myself, knew very little on the topic until I visited a naturopath to discuss my various symptoms, which included eczema, hair loss, and digestive distress. It was only once I was formally tested and diagnosed with the condition that I began my research into the world of “leaky gut.”
Words by Sheeva Ghassemian, Recognised Lifestyle, Food & Wellness Coach

So what is leaky gut?

First things first- the “gut” in leaky gut is referring to your small intestine, hence the synonymous term “intestinal permeability.” Many use the term “gut” in reference to the entire digestive system, but in regards to this condition we are discussing the state of the small intestine, specifically the lining of the small intestine. To put it very simply, leaky gut is a condition in which the normally tight junctions of the small intestinal lining have loosened and are now allowing larger particles to pass through and enter the bloodstream. The main issue with this scenario is that these larger particles that are now passing through the intestine’s lining and entering the bloodstream are toxins and undigested food particles. Our bodies then attack these large particles, leading to a state of heightened inflammation, and thus leading to various health issues and symptoms.
To put it very simply, leaky gut is a condition in which the normally tight junctions of the small intestinal lining have loosened and are now allowing larger particles to pass through and enter the bloodstream.

What can be done to heal leaky gut?

Leaky gut it said to be caused by a whole host of factors such as stress, environmental toxins, genetics, and diet. Most of these factors are somewhat out of our control. We can reduce our stress through meditation techniques and limit our exposure to toxins in our home, but that may not be enough to heal the gut. The one factor that we do have complete control over is our diet, and dietary changes are one of the most powerful tools we have for healing leaky gut. Dietary changes might include:
  • Avoiding foods that are known allergens/intolerances for you (try an elimination diet at home!)
  • Avoiding processed food (especially processed sugars)
  • Including plenty of fermented veggies in your meals
  • Significantly reducing consumption of grains, especially gluten
  • Including plenty of whole fats- such as ghee, coconut oil, beef tallow and grass-fed butter
  • Consuming bone broth and collagen supplements regularly

These are just a few dietary suggestions proposed to heal leaky gut. There are also said to be two very powerful and well-known healing diets to consider: the gut and psychology syndrome diet (GAPS) and the autoimmune paleo protocol (AIP). The important thing to note is that these dietary changes are temporary and, once the gut has healed, you should be able to re-introduce most foods.

If you’re thinking “do I have leaky gut?”

If you have symptoms related to your digestion, immunity, hair and skin, mood, and/or general well being that have yet to be addressed by other diagnostic testing and medications then you may want to discuss leaky gut testing with a healthcare practitioner. There are numerous tests available to test for leaky gut and are available through most naturopaths and some GPs.

If you are concerned about making the dietary changes to heal leaky gut, you may seek out a food coach who can help ensure you are meeting your nutritional requirements while healing your gut.
