The Gut & Microbiome

Health starts from the inside - it starts at the gut!
ENROL NOW
Gut health is key to overall well-being, affecting everything from digestion to disease. This in-depth course explores the microbiome’s role in health, backed by cutting-edge science. Perfect for holistic health enthusiasts!

Overview

So, what exactly is a ‘healthy’ gut microbiome? It’s a question more and more researchers around the world are investigating as they strive to understand how an unhealthy gut microbiome may cause – or be linked to – disease and poor health (physically, mentally and emotionally). Identifying the characteristics of a healthy microbiome is a challenging task, though – especially as each of us seems to have a unique microbiota that is constantly evolving.

You'll learn about this and more in this exciting course. Be clear there is a whole bunch of science in this subject, it's in-depth and explores physiology, disease and the life of bacteria. To keep things fresh the content is interspersed with videos, readings, and some activities, culminating with the option to create your own Gut Health Planner.

UNIT CONTENT ▼
This unit will introduce learners to the physiology of the gut microbiome and how our gut is linked to health and disease, including the connection to physical and mental health conditions. Learners will also develop their understanding of the gut-brain axis, the most common gut health conditions, and the key factors that influence our gut health.

Gut health sits at the core of overall wellbeing, influencing digestion, immunity, hormones, mental health, and chronic disease risk. This comprehensive unit provides a clear, science-informed understanding of how the digestive system functions, the role of the gut microbiome, and the complex ways the gut communicates with the rest of the body. Students are guided through key physiological processes, including digestion, nutrient metabolism, vitamin synthesis, and immune defence.

The unit explores the gut–brain axis, inflammation pathways, and the interaction between stress, hormones, and the microbiome, helping learners understand how gut imbalance can contribute to both physical and mental health conditions. Common gastrointestinal disorders such as IBS, SIBO, GERD, coeliac disease, and lactose intolerance are examined, alongside emerging research on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), microbial diversity, and systemic inflammation. This enables students to build a holistic picture of gut-driven health and disease.

Designed for those seeking practical, evidence-based knowledge, the course also focuses on maintaining and restoring gut health through nutrition and lifestyle strategies. Learners will explore the principles of healthful eating, the effective use of probiotics and resistant starch, and the key factors that support a resilient, balanced microbiome. This unit is ideal for health coaches, wellness practitioners, and health-focused individuals looking to deepen their understanding of the gut as a foundation for long-term health.
LEARNING OUTCOMES ▼
When awarded credit for this unit, a learner will:
  1. Explain the structure and function of the gut, including the microbiome, and how gut health influences wider systems of the body and common health conditions.
  2. Understand the key factors that disrupt or support gut health, and apply evidence-informed strategies to establish and maintain a healthy gut.
Students by the end of the course will be competent to:
  • Describe the key processes involved in digestion, including the functions of the small and large intestines, and the role of the gut in supporting innate immunity.
  • Define key microbiome-related terms and explain the role of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in gut health, while assessing the factors that influence microbiome balance and function.
  • Characterise key gut bacteria and associated gastrointestinal conditions, and explain how inflammation, the gut–brain axis, and hormonal interactions influence gut health and whole-body function.
  • Summarise the principles of healthful eating and evaluate the role of key dietary components, including probiotics and resistant starch, in supporting gut health.
