We sadly are no longer able to have many of our nutrition courses approved by AUSActive (Fitness Australia) as our courses have been deemed to offer content beyond what is in the existing training package for PTs. In essence, 'continuing education' beyond what you have already studied is out of the scope on the presumption that PTs might use nutrition above the basic guidelines with clients. Go figure...  Read more below about your registration options.
* Prerequisite of Psychology unit
** Conversion of Fitness Australia CEC to Physical Activity Australia PDP; 1-3 CECs equates to 1 PPA PDP point; 4-8 CECs equates to 2 PDP and 9-15 CECs equate to 3 PDPs.
*** Note for ESSA Members- this course may require manual grading. To ensure CPD points are credited to the current registration period please ensure you submit your assessment by 14th December. Consult office for more info.

# NOTE FOR AUSREPS - ESSA APPROVED COURSES AND CECS - AFFILIATED EDUCATION COURSE POINTS
Programs approved by ESSA now offer 1 CEC per 2 hours education time (a minimum of 2 hours education is required). Note: The maximum CECs that can be earned in any given two-year registration period via this method is:
  • Level 2 AusREPs | up to 4 CECs
  • Level 3 AusREPs | up to 10 CECs
This can be accumulated via multiple approved programs/events attended. Please contact AUSActive (Fitness Australia) for further details.

We recommend you discuss any Affiliated Education courses directly with AUSActive (Fitness Australia) to ensure the points will be accepted as there is also a question of Scope of Practice.

Evidence Required: Eligible REPsmust be able to provide the following information for each program/event: • Completed and signed Affiliated Education Application outlining information about the program/event and how it aligns with your professional goals and development as an REP; • Evidence of participating in the program/event (ie. Certificate of completion or attendance). This evidence must clearly identify the authorized association/organisation approving this form of education; and •The associated program outline (indicating content & schedule of the program).

DO I NEED REGISTRATION?

The short answer is NO! Of course industry registration can help build a strong, safe and professional industry, so in many cases it's something to consider, but look around, don't just fall into 'that's who they said to go with', big is not necessarily best.

DO I HAVE TO BE REGISTERED WITH FITNESS AUSTRALIA?

Again, No.

Some gyms and centres may determine that they require you to hold registration, in such cases it's almost always with Fitness Australia. However, there is no regulation saying you have to be registered with them, you may want to balance out things out and look at other registration options such as FitRec or Physical Activity Australia, the latter being not-for-profit; competition is a healthy thing. Increasingly we are finding employers are opting for a more flexible approach with who their PT's can register with which enables PTs to chose bodies who enable a wider range of continuing education courses.


WHAT DO I NEED?

You will need to hold a current CPR in order to get insurance. It is not advisable to ever work commercially without relevant insurance. And, while registration is not mandatory you recommend you shop around. Consider the following:
     - Physical Activity Australia (PAA is a not for profit organisation)
     - FitRec (a new player on the scene shaking things up a bit)
   - The International Institute of Complementary Therapies (IICT is a large registering body offering a very broad range of options)

You will find that the registration fee, insurance options (who the provider has partnered with in terms of insurance recommendations), continuing education credit requirements and cost of courses, industry support and level of engagement with personal trainers differs substantially across registering bodies.

Consider registration as a valid part of your professional development and services, but shop about, it's your money, your business and you should find a registering body that has a synergy with you. And remember, organisations such as Fitness Australia are membership bodies, if you are a member you should ensure your voice is heard! Members first!!!
